Project results

Extrinite runs documented trials and publishes the results, including the ones that did not work.

Extrinite was established in 2022. Its founders and leadership have worked in surface preparation and protective coatings since 1998. Reports record surface profile, cleanliness and adhesion.

Carboguard 890 recoat preparation

Recoat window, already past
90days

Working with Carboline and a terminal operator on newly fabricated storage tanks, laser ablation was used to prepare existing Carboguard 890 past its 90-day recoat window. Adhesion pull tests on laser-prepared steel recoated with 890 maxed out the gauge at 3000 PSI. Measured profiles ranged from 1.98 to 3.5 mils.

Refinery process equipment

Subcontracting to Repcon, Extrinite performed laser ablation on Stabilizer Tower and Visbreaker equipment, removing oxidation, hydrocarbons and chlorides with minimal heat so inspection, coating and welding could proceed. Completed within budget and ahead of schedule.

Coating manufacturer position

Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine has confirmed in writing that it approves the use of laser blasting equipment where the surface profile required by the product data sheet for each product is met.

Flash rust after laser cleaning

On shop samples, steel cleaned by laser ablation stayed free of visible flash rust longer than abrasive-blasted steel. Extrinite is now testing it on matched coupons. No longer coating window is claimed.

Rental equipment

Two continuous wave fiber laser systems. The 2,000 W is the standard system for most work; the 3,000 W is for larger, more extensive scopes.

2,000 W system

Standard system for most work, including small components and complex geometry. 220 V single phase.

3,000 W system

Larger, more extensive scopes of work. 480 V.

All questions

Does Extrinite rent equipment, perform the work, or both?

Both. Extrinite rents 2,000 W and 3,000 W laser cleaning systems with operator training, and mobilizes its own crews for field service work. Rentals ship nationwide. Field services serve Texas, Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.

Are the systems pulsed or continuous wave?

Both rental systems are continuous wave (CW) fiber lasers operating at 1064 nm.

Will laser cleaning work on my coating?

It depends on the coating system, its thickness and the substrate. Extrinite has removed coatings from 4 mils up to 50–70 mils in testing, with widely different results by product. The reliable answer is a test on a representative sample before you commit to the method.

How does it compare with abrasive blasting?

On localized work, restricted areas, and surfaces where blast media or containment create problems, laser ablation is often the better choice. On large-area bulk removal, abrasive blasting is generally quicker. Extrinite's own test reports record laser production rates as slower than sandblasting on thick coatings.

What does the equipment need from my site?

Electrical supply (220 V single phase at 30 A for the 2,000 W; 480 V at 50 A for the 3,000 W), gas or clean compressed air, and a Class 4 laser controlled area with appropriate PPE and extraction. Service leads reach 60 ft from the laser source on the 2,000 W system and 100 ft on the 3,000 W.

What does laser cleaning leave to dispose of?

There is no spent abrasive to contain, recover or dispose of. The coating, rust or residue that comes off becomes dust and fume, comparable to welding fume, and how hazardous it is depends on the coating being removed.

It is captured by extraction, with HEPA filtration where a coating contains lead or other hazardous constituents. Only the captured material needs handling and disposal under your site's requirements.
